Being set on the banks of the River Thames is undoubtedly a luxury the Kingston area well affords, but it’s far from the only charm which draws people to it. There are so many attractions and events that it’s difficult to be at a loose end and you don’t even need to splash out to really appreciate them.

Surrey is steeped in history, the landscape and buildings of the area reflect this, and thankfully have been fantastically conserved. Hampton Court in all its regal splendor attracts tourists from all over the world to indulge its 500 year history and the renowned annual flower show. There’s also Ham House in nearby Petersham. Built in 1610 it has much of the original interiors in tact and the formal gardens have been restored to original glory.

The Thames lends itself to romantic outdoor scenery, but there’s more in the way of outdoor indulgences. Bushy Park is second to none. Stretching across 1,099 acres its long history is entwined with that of Hampton Court palace and the magnificent Arethusa ’Diana’ fountain makes an impressive centerpiece. Red and fallow deer are often spotted roaming at leisure, along with other wildlife. www.royalparks.gov

You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to outdoor space as the intriguing Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew are a short distance away and you can witness and learn about all the fascinating work and discoveries made there. www.rbgkew.org.uk

Then there’s Epsom Downs Racecourse which makes for a thrilling day out especially if you participate in the famous ‘Ladies Day’ www.epsomderby.co.uk

Of course there’s no ignoring the dominating Thames, and nor would you want to. There’s nothing comparable to a summer evening spent in one of the bars or restaurants spreading along its banks, and during long summer days it enjoys the vibrancy of all the entities which enjoy it to the full, and that doesn’t just include the hundreds of swans and other wildlife. The annual boat race finishes in nearby Chiswick, but you don’t have to venture away to be a spectator of river races and boat displays. The Kingston regatta www.kingstonregatta.co.uk is stretched over two days in midsummer and accommodates around 400 races. It’s also a rare opportunity to see various fleets, from the modest yacht to the marvelous liner. Also the ‘Dragon Boat Race’ in June provides a fun filled day out for all the family.

If you prefer to take pleasure in more inland activities, then you’re not neglected. Every Sunday from June to September Canbury Gardens, which nestles between Richmond Road and the river, hosts live music concerts from its bandstand. From classical to folk, it’s a really relaxing way to spend a Sunday.

Also held at Canbury Gardens is the annual ‘Kingston Green Fair’ www.kingstongreenfair.org.uk it’s been running since 1987 and attracts nearly 15,000 visitors each year. The Green fair aims to promote environmental awareness, whilst promoting organic, healthy and natural ways of living.

The simple fact is that Kingston and the surrounding areas have an abundance of attractions. Kingston itself is famous to those who like a bit of retail therapy and people come from miles to treat themselves in the Bentalls centre, and the newly built ‘Rotunda’ is home to the largest Odeon cinema in the UK, and also has a variety of restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets www.kingstononline.co.uk

The diverse mix of bars, restaurants, café’s and clubs determine that leisure time in Kingston will never be dull.

The borough boasts an impressive assortment of community course for children:
• Latchmere junior School (boys and girls aged 7-11)
• Fernhill Primary School for girls and boys
• The Hollyfield School & Centre for continuing education (foundation secondary school for boys & girls 11-18)
